While Michaella McCollum has tasted freedom, albeit while on parole and required to remain in Peru for years yet, what of the Scottish half of the ‘Peru Two’ Melissa Reid?
It turns out that Reid is still in jail in Peru but is close to a return home to Scotland to serve out the remainder of her sentence.
Catholic cleric Sean Walsh regularly visits her and has said that since Melissa has now served 30 per cent of her sentence an agreement is imminent.
He told the Times: ‘I believe it may happen in the near future, from what I’m hearing.
‘She would be remanded to the airplane, which means she would be taken straight to the airport and put on a plane back home.’
The cleric visited both Michaella and Melissa at the Ancon Dos prison and has discussed the case with both Peruvian and British authorities.
Michaella, from Dungannon, Co Tyrone, is staying at Walsh’s three-bedroom apartment in Lima for the foreseeable future with Walsh and his wife.
Reid, 22, is still in jail because she has explicitly requested a return home to Scotland.
Under a prisoner agreement British people can opt to serve 50 per cent of their time in the UK after serving 30 per cent in Peru, according to the archbishop.
Archbishop Walsh added: ‘Michaella wanted her freedom and was willing to stay in Peru but Melissa was keen to return home and see her family, even if she is in prison.’
Melissa’s mum Debbie told the Mail On Sunday that Melissa was aware that Michaella was going to get out on parole but never said a word to anyone, despite making daily phone calls to her family in Scotland.
Debbie said: ‘She was sworn to secrecy and kept her word to protect her friend.’
