Whether you meant to or not, has invaded your musical lexicon over the last year. That slightly nasally, jazzy voice giving a “shout out to the birthday girls” on Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy-winning ? That female vocalist on “untitled 03” and “untitled 05” from untitled umastered.? All Wise. Heck, she’s even featured on good kid, m.A.A.d. city.
Kendrick discovered Wise for when he came across , a song from her band Sonnymoon. She’s been part of his musical entourage ever since (and yes, she took home a golden gramophone for “These Walls”), but now she’s breaking out on her own with a debut solo EP.
The EP was previously previewed with “Precious Possession”. Today, she’s dropped a new single, “BitchSlut”. The woozy hip-pop track tackles the double standards and “deflections” that come with being a woman in 2016. “I know what kind you are,” goes the chorus. “If I say no, I’m a bitch/ Say yes I’m slut.” The topic at hand is something Wise isn’t just tackling in “BitchSlut”, either.
“There is a theme,” Wise told SPIN of the EP’s material, “and the theme is ‘women.’ Women are great. We’re fucking great, and I want to talk about us. And talk about myself, because I’m a woman. I guess it’s kind of selfish. ‘Let’s talk about me!’”
Selfish or not, she has a message to get across and has delivered it in catchy, intriguing fashion with “BitchSlut”. Take a listen below via its homemade video.
