Hulk Hogan’s trial against Gawker began on Monday, with the wrestler testifying that the website’s posting of a secretly recorded sex tape left him “humiliated” and “violently shaking.”
Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, is suing Gawker’s parent company after it posted a portion of the sex tape on its site in 2012. In the video, Hogan can be seen having sex with Heather Clem, the wife of his then-friend and radio personality, Bubba “The Love Sponge” Clem. “I was completely humiliated,” Hogan testified in court. “I was embarrassed by what it did to me as a person, but it was even embarrassing as a character. Hulk Hogan was embarrassed.” Hogan further said on the stand that when the tape surfaced online it left him “violently shaking.”
The wrestler said in court that his public persona is very different than who he actually is. “Terry Bollea’s a normal person. Wrestling is my job. It’s what Terry Bollea does for a living,” he said. “I don’t argue. I’m not loud. Pretty soft spoken to a fault. Don’t know how really to say no, even though I’m learning how to say no to my kids.”
Hogan is seeking $100 million in damages from Gawker for posting the one minute and 40 seconds long video, which features only nine second of sex. Prior to Hogan’s testimony, one of his attorney claimed Gawker was guided by “power and profit” and had “intended to harm him.” But Gawker stated in opening argument that Hogan was “more than willing to talk about his sex life, including in two autobiographies, a reality TV series and Howard Stern’s radio show, until he didn’t like what Gawker had to say.”
