Gods of Egypt is one of the worst reviewed films so far this year and it’s particularly getting heat for its .
While Nikolaj Coster-Waldau can’t speak for film’s reportedly cheesy visual effects or sloppy writing, the Danish actor did defend his casting by revealing he wasn’t even playing an Egyptian character!
Speaking to The Red Bulletin, the star admitted that the negative attention the epic has been getting for whitewashing is getting on his nerves.
“A lot of people are getting really worked up online about the fact that I’m a white actor. I’m not even playing an Egyptian – I’m an 8ft-tall god who turns into a falcon.”
So, basically he’s saying the film is too outrageous to be controversial? LOLz!
Misleading title aside, Gods Of Egypt doesn’t actually take place in the Egypt we know, but an alternate world where the world is flat and gods live among humans (and are apparently all different races)!
Though Coster-Waldau says the ongoing debate annoys him, he doesn’t want to make waves in such a sensitive subject, adding:
“A part of me just wants to freak out, but then I think, ‘There’s nothing you can do about it. You can’t win in that sort of discussion’.”
Seeing as the film uses the names and iconography of actual ancient Egyptian deities, we’re not sure if the whole “alternative universe” card excuses the film from casting white leads.
Unfortunately we may never know for sure as apparently …
Do YOU think Gods Of Egypt should have cast more Egyptians?
