What makes vaginas so compelling? Sure, they do seemingly superhuman things for our bodies on a regular basis and can play a rad role in sex, but what’s behind their knack for showing up in the news again and again? We may never know the answer, but I can guarantee that after browsing through the fascinating vagina stories below, you’ll never look at your lady parts the same way again. Behold, nine times the vaginas made the news…
1. When a vaginal weightlifter captured the world’s attention.
Kim Anami, a 44-year-old sex and relationships coach, uses Instagram to share photos of herself lifting heavy things with her vagina, a skill she’s been working on for 20 years. To perform her weightlifting feats, Anami ties a string around a jade egg, which then she inserts into her lady parts. Whatever she intends to lift is tied to the other end of the string. Anami claims she can lift up to ten pounds, and insists that the practice has vastly improved her sex life and led to the best orgasms she’s ever had.
2. When a woman was arrested over a 3D scan of her vagina.
In 2014, Japanese artist Megumi Igarashi made a 3D scan of her vulva as part of a larger plan to create a vagina-like kayak based on the scan—all as a piece of performance art. She used a crowdfunding site to make the project happen, and emailed the 3D scan to her funders as a reward for contributing. The emails allegedly violated Japan’s obscenity laws, and Igarashi was arrested.
3. That time an Australian artist made vaginal knitting a hip new craft.
Artist Casey Jenkins made waves in 2013 when she launched a performance art project in which she spent 28 days knitting with wool that she’d placed inside her vagina. She shared that she hoped the piece, called would get observers thinking about why the project makes them so uncomfortable. “I hope that people question the fears and the negative associations they have with the vulva,” she told Gawker.

4. That time a woman found a ball of cat hair in her vagina.
Last year, a woman named Michelle Barrow penned an essay for xoJane about a doctor discovering what Barrow claimed was a cluster of hair belonging to her cat. Not surprisingly, the internet then proceeded to freak out. Barrow that she allows her pets to sleep in her bed, and that she and her fiancé don’t use condoms when they have sex, so her theory is that bits of cat hair from her sheets had been pushed into her vagina by her fiancé’s penis. (Sexually active pet owners, apologies in advance for any paranoia that visual may have just fueled).
Medical professionals and internet rubberneckers alike have debated over whether such a thing is even possible, but Barrow insists she’s telling the truth. “I think the moral of the story is that vaginas are crazy mysterious enigmas that we will never really understand,” Barrow later told The Cut. “So we may as well just write about how weird they are on the internet.”
5. When a blogger baked bread using her own vaginal yeast.
Zoe Stavri runs a blog called “Another Angry Woman.” Last year, after suffering from a yeast infection, she removed the yeast from her vagina and used it as a base ingredient to make homemade sourdough bread. Naturally, she heavily documented the experience online with photos.
6. That time a woman showed her vagina to museum-goers in Paris.
Deborah de Robertis of Luxembourg showed up at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris a few years ago and plopped herself down on the floor in front of a famous nude painting that depicts a vagina—Gustave Courbet’s “The Origin Of The World.” Then, she spread her legs and exposed herself to museum-goers as an act of performance art. Not surprisingly, she was arrested for indecent exposure, but not before making a very big stir.

7. When a woman offered up her vagina as a phone charger.
At the Miami Art Basel art fair in 2014, performance artist Lena Marquise let passersby—including celebrities like Usher—charge their phones in her vagina. The act was a piece of art she called “Body As Commodity.” Marquise hung out at the fair in the nude, and while she’s remained mum on the logistics of how the charger worked (she’s stated that she wants patrons to experience the performance themselves instead), it seems that she had charger cables dangling from her vagina that were available for anyone to use.
8. When a Polish company dreamed up a plan to brew “vagina beer.”
A brewing company called the Order of Yoni created “Bottled Instinct,” a beer made from vaginal bacteria. The first batch uses the vaginal “essence” of a Czech model named Alexandra Brendlova. The company launched an Indiegogo page to fund their venture, but have struggled to raise much money so far.
9. When a super-sized vagina tried to save a super-sized penis from an attack.
Two actors caught the attention of strangers back in 2013 when they stepped out on the streets of Glastonbury, England dressed as a penis and a vagina. The stunt was to promote an upcoming local theatre production, but things got messy when a local passerby nearly attacked Chris Murray, the actor in the penis costume.
“He started shouting at me, saying it was disgusting and children could see us.” he told the Western Morning News. “I could tell by his body language that he was really angry. I tried to calm him down, I wasn’t looking for a fight; but he grabbed my hat, tore it off and chucked it on the pavement.” Luckily, Joanne Tremarco, who was rocking the vagina costume, swept in to try to diffuse the situation. When a police officer arrived to investigate the altercation, Tremarco kept things calm by insuring they did not want to press charges against the violent man. She also learned the she and Murray could be arrested themselves for their graphic costumes, and were forced to change back into street clothes.
