There has been little to no movement on the long-awaited over the past seven years, but fans have been clamoring for a follow-up ever since the original Zombieland became a box office hit in 2009. Earlier this month, Sony Pictures displayed the sequel’s logo during their CinemaCon presentation, hinting that the sequel is still happening. Now we have word that filming may actually begin soon. While this hasn’t been confirmed by Sony quite yet, a new report claims that Zombieland 2 is gearing up to start shooting in Atlanta this August.
The report from only claims that filming may begin in mid-August in Atlanta, which is where the original was largely shot, except for a few scenes in Los Angeles. While no cast members have been confirmed, it is believed that the four primary stars, (Columbus), (Tallahassee), Emma Stone (Wichita) and Abigail Breslin (Little Rock) will be back to reprise their roles. It isn’t clear how many new characters will be brought in for the at this time.
Way back in 2014, we reported that original Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer will return to direct Zombieland 2, working from a script by Dave Callaham (Godzilla). Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote a back in 2010, and the writers revealed in a February interview that they are still on board as executive producers. The writers most recently wrote the current blockbuster Deadpool, which recently became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
The original Zombieland grossed $75.5 million domestically off a $28 million budget, with a worldwide gross of $102.3 million. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick also wrote the script for a Zombieland TV pilot which was produced as part of Amazon Studios’ first ever pilot season. While all four of the main characters were featured in the show, they were all played by different actors, and Amazon didn’t pick up the pilot to series. If this report about filming starting in August is true, hopefully we’ll here more about casting very soon.
Back in March, Jesse Eisenberg revealed that he still wants to make Zombieland 2, but it isn’t clear if Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin want to reprise their roles. Jesse Eisenberg will next be seen alongside Woody Harrelson in another sequel, Now You See Me 2, which hits theaters this June. It’s possible that, by the time both actors start doing press for that movie, we may have a better idea about whether or not Zombieland 2 is actually happening or not.
