Director Jeff Grace has acted in movies (It’s a Disaster) and TV (How I Met Your Mother, Mad Men), but it was his experiences as a stand-up comic opening for rock bands that inspired his directorial debut Folk Hero & Funny Guy. Grace, along with stars Alex Karpovsky, Wyatt Russell and Meredith Hagner, visited Deadline’s Tribeca Studio at the Tribeca Film Festival to discuss the film, which was shot in Atlanta with cast and crew shacking up in side-by-side houses. Russell, the son of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn who’s also appearing in Everybody Wants Some!!, plays Jason, a famous folk-rock musician who invites childhood pal Paul (Alex Karpovsky of Girls), a down-on-his-luck comic, on a concert tour. The road trip/buddy comedy gets complicated with the arrival of Hagner’s Bryn, a singer who might or might not come between the two buddies.
Russell says he wanted in on the pic immediately: “I loved Jeff and Alex,” he says of his director/writer and costar. Also at Deadline’s Tribeca Studio, the film’s producer Ryland Aldrich discusses how the film’s financing came together, in part through a Kickstarter fund that raised $50,003.
