The CW announced this morning that it’s sticking with its entire scripted series line-up, renewing all of its shows for another season bar the upcoming medical thriller “Containment” which has yet to premiere.
The network has handed out early renewals for eleven of its series including: “The 100,” “Arrow,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” “The Flash,” “iZombie,” “Jane the Virgin,” “The Originals,” “Reign,” “Supernatural” and “The Vampire Diaries”.
Buoyed by the popularity of its DC Comics-inspired shows and the critical acclaim for several of its series, the network is one of the few that allows shows time to develop a following. It’s a strategy that has been paying off, ratings are up 56% in total viewers and 30% among the coveted adults 18-49 demographic.
Network president Mark Pedowitz says he also remains committed to a year-round schedule which includes more originals in the typical lower-rated summer period.
The network is currently mulling six pilots to potentially pick up to series with three likely to join. At present the most likely candidate to make it will be the Archie Comics-inspired “Riverdale”. Others in the works include a TV series adaptation of “Frequency,” monster origin tale “Transylvania,” a Kevin Williamson-produced supernatural thriller, and a Mars-set survival drama.
