She might not be taking part in the Gilmore Girls revival on Netflix, but 2016 is still set to be a pretty big year for Melissa McCarthy. First off, there’s the small matter of her starring role in the Paul Feig directed Ghostbusters movie, when she will share the screen with Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Chris Hemsworth. McCarthy teamed with Feig last year for Spy, and no doubt fans will be hoping for more of her great physical comedy. Before that though, McCarthy will star in The Boss (formerly titled Michelle Darnell).
Penned by McCarthy and her husband, Ben Falcone, the red band (very NSFW) trailer for The Boss has dropped online and can be viewed above. A new poster for the film can also be seen, below.
McCarthy stars in The Boss as Michelle Darnell, the self-titled richest woman in America. A hard-headed business woman with a killer tennis shot, Michelle comes unstuck when she is sent to prison for insider trading. Having lost all her fortune, she must rely on the help of her worn-down manager (Kristen Bell), taking up residence on her couch after she gets out of jail. The pair then set to work trying to rebrand Michelle as America’s Sweetheart, but her blunt manner and hard-hitting ways are not easy to overcome – and it seems as though those she screwed over might not be very quick to forgive.
The Boss is directed by Falcone and joining McCarthy and Bell in the cast are Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Kathy Bates (American Horror Story), Kristen Schaal (Gravity Falls), and Cecily Strong (SNL).
Following on from the first trailer, it is once again the visual gags in The Boss that lift this trailer – and, even though it contains quite a bit of previously-released footage, it’s still fresh and funny. We all know the formulaic plotline of successful, ruthless entrepreneur who sees the error of their ways and realize that family is where it’s at, but The Boss seems to turn that on its head. That’s not to say there won’t be the same happy ending here, but the road to get there will be far more fun.
Michelle Darnell seems like the perfect over-the-top parody of those obnoxious business moguls that we all love to hate (one could almost compare McCarthy’s character to someone currently trying to become the Republican Presidential candidate…). Indeed, McCarthy has a great gift for witty, fast-paced comedy – and, after the joy that was Spy, it’s a reasonable hope that she might deliver again here, too.
The Boss will be released in U.S. theaters April 8, 2016.
