Marvel’s event of the year, Captain America: Civil War, is only a couple months away. The film is rooted in the 2oo6 Marvel Civil War comic miniseries, which explored the Superhuman Registration Act (the Superhero Registration Act in Cap 3). The initial seven run limited series was scripted and drawn by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, respectively, and caused a rift across the entire Marvel superhero line. The carnage from the series spilled into the smaller event about to hit the big screen in May, as well as reverberating across dozens of subsequent comic book issues.
As the Secret Wars came to a close this January, resetting Marvel’s comic universe, yet another Civil War is pending. Marvel has done a fine job preparing fans for Civil War’s sequel, too, pumping out fun promos featuring Black Panther, Hawkeye, and Ms. Marvel, as well as other major and minor characters. And similar to the previous Civil War and upcoming Captain America 3, one superhero will once again likely play a key role in deciding the fate of the Marvel universe – Spider-Man.

Although Spider-Man’s official role in Civil War II is unknown at this point, clearly Marvel is setting the stage for another major superhero clash (via Nerdist). One of their promotional teasers even shows Ms. Marvel tearing up a poster of her icon, Captain Marvel. Why would she do this? It’s all explained in Marvel’s official description of the impending comic crossover by Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez:
“A mysterious new Marvel character comes to the attention of the world, one who has the power to calculate the outcome of future events with a high degree of accuracy. This predictive power divides the Marvel heroes on how best to capitalize on this aggregated information, with Captain Marvel leading the charge to profile future crimes and attacks before they occur, and Iron Man adopting the position that the punishment cannot come before the crime.”
The epic comic book narrative seems loosely inspired by the Philip K. Dick story/Steven Spielberg film, Minority Report, about predictive crime-fighters. Merging this prognostic story with an enigmatic new character, while creating a sequel to the influential Civil War arc, is offers a lot of potential. It’s also interesting seeing Iron Man takes a less authoritarian perspective in this battle – whereas he was considered a borderline villain in the Civil War story arc. And once again Marvel’s comic book universe will come to blows over an intriguing ethical issue – one with no easy answers. Just like with its prequel, Civil War II boasts another mystery, at least beyond the motives of the foretelling newcomer: ?
Arguably one of the most important characters in Marvel’s pantheon, Spider-Man has a reduced role in the upcoming film, due to his late release from Sony to sign on in Disney’s MCU. His role in the comic saga was much more decisive, though, with Peter Parker initially siding with Iron Man before jumping ship to team Cap. After all the carnage from the prior Civil War, one initially assumes Spidey would side with anyone except Iron Man.
However, the events of the Secret Wars left a clean slate behind for the Marvel superheroes. And as a scientifically inclined superhero, Spider-Man might side with the more rational viewpoint – that of Iron Man. However, as someone who’s personally wrestled with the detrimental effects of crime (see Uncle Ben), Captain Marvel’s prophetic crime fighting team may appeal to his desire to stop crime before it happens.
