While future textbooks will have a lot of positives to parse in the tenure of President Barack Obama (first black president, leading the country out of a recession, normalizing relations with Cuba, etc.), his eight years in office has seen its fair share of criticism. Obama expanded the use of extrajudicial killing via drone, did not reduce the national security state as expected, and he admitted to being a fan of J. Cole.
POTUS went on record with his J. Cole standom during a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee in Austin, Texas. Obama admitted that he knows about Cole – a rapper who ruined “Planez” and has in his songs to have this writer concerned for his health – thanks to his two daughters.
“You know, this is the benefit of having teenage daughters. I actually keep up,” he said. “I got a chance to see J. Cole’s mom and grandma.”
J. Cole performed at the fundraiser on March 12, so he probably heard Obama add him to his list of much-loved rappers, a list that most notably includes Kendrick Lamar. The president picked Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly track “How much A Dollar Cost?” as his favorite song of 2015 and recently met with the rapper before taking his side in the constant Goku v. Superman discussion between the Comptonite and Drake.
