If ever you thought an episode of “Orphan Black” would glide by on sheer charm and personality … well, pal, you’ve got another thing coming. Thursday’s episode of the BBC America series, titled “From Instinct to Rational Control,” had a lot of moving parts as various pieces of the Neolution puzzle came together to form a slight vision of the bigger picture at hand. While it’s easy to focus on the levity provided by Donnie (Kristian Bruun) and Felix’s (Jordan Gavaris) undercover routine at the Lifespring Fertility clinic, we’re putting all eyes on hacker supreme: M.K.

The clone is the newest addition to the Ledas (Tatiana Maslany) this season and one that has been presented with the most mystique. The sheep masks and multiple firewalls — both of the technical and explosive varieties — has painted this character as a very real, very paranoid, very revenge-focused individual. Up until this point, many have tried getting answers about Mika’s whole deal and have come up short. Leave it to Topside’s cleaner Ferdinand (James Frain) to bring out the clone’s secrets.
After discovering that Sarah and the rest of the gang were working with Ferdinand to take down Neolution, M.K. lured the spectacled menace to Beth’s old apartment. Leading the man into this trap felt easier than it should’ve been but, aside from the booby-trapped chair he found himself seated in, the real bomb dropped only minutes later.
“Helsinki” — it’s a word that has been referenced on the show before and the connection between Ferdinand and M.K. suddenly became clear. Tying these events back to the limited edition “Orphan Black” comic books that series creators John Fawcett and Graeme Manson delivered to keep the story moving, it seems that Ferdinand’s violent ways affected M.K. on a very personal level.
The operation that transpired in Helsinki ended up killing off a group of self-aware clones. M.K. — or Veera Suominen — was the sole survivor. It’s this watershed moment that started her on this path to not only seek out other clones, but to take out Neolution’s structure one brick at a time. She got to Ferdinand — and his $3.7 million in riches — but her main target is the tippy top of Topside: Susan Duncan (Rosemary Dunsmore).

It looks like the Clone Club may have just lost two confidants, as Helena packed her bags and left the Hendrix household. Not for nothing, but those bottled babies she buried in the garden may be foreshadowing to something bigger. Then again, it could just be a symbolic punctuation mark for an episode fully immersed in the topic of fertility.
What’s the story, though, with the DNA-altering NEO tech? These ominous-sounding BrightBorn Treatments will probably tie into that question quite nicely. As we said — so many puzzle pieces!
With Veera on the warpath, some much needed punch should be added to Rachel Duncan’s, so far, snoozy storyline. Our fingers are crossed as “Orphan Black” has really succeeded at setting up those dramatic dominos. When they finally fall, things may literally blow up.
“Orphan Black” airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on BBC America.
