As American Crime Story continues to captivate audiences, so do the real-life developments of the Nicole Brown-Ronald Goldman double homicide case. This case, of course, remains open because O.J. Simpson was acquitted on all related charges, and no one else has been charged or convicted. Simpson remains insulated by the Fifth Amendment’s double jeopardy clause, but this case has continued to bubble for decades.
That bubble approached a simmer last week when the LAPD confirmed the existence of new evidence, which had been unearthed and squirreled away for nearly two decades. The LAPD is currently investigating a “souvenir” knife that was discovered when Simpson’s estate was razed. Former Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark has since spoken on the matter, saying she doubts the knife’s legitimacy. Like many folks, she “can’t believe” a retired officer would drop the ball on important evidence.
In the spirit of dropping the ball, former Simpson manager Vince Pardo is now speaking out on Juice’s behalf. Speaking with KNX 1070 Newsradio, Pardo assures the audience that Simpson “isn’t losing any sleep” over the new knife buzz. Simpson’s “ignoring” and “shrugging off” the case, possibly because he knows he won’t be tried again. Then Pardo drops a little bomb of his own by claiming to have known the killer’s true identity all along:
“I know who did it and I know why they did it. I just can’t disclose it right now … We tried to talk to the police, but they took all my stuff regarding the incidents. We had people working on it, and when we talked to the police about it, they raided my office and took it all.”
A soap opera stare would be inappropriate when we’re talking about double homicide, but that’s how the O.J. Simpson trial played out in the 1990s. That’s how folks remember it, and that’s why it’s being recreated for the small screen. Big ratings then and big ratings now. As for Pardo’s claims about the “real” murderer, well, maybe he’s got a book on the way.
