Bryson Tiller may have cornered the market on the trap-soul genre, but to KAYTRANADA and Anderson .Paak deserve to have synth-soul all to themselves. KAYTRANADA is gearing up to drop his proper debut, 99.9%, after lending his synth-smith sensibilities to too many artists to keep track of. Just in the past 10 days he’s collabed with Pusha T, Mick Jenkins, Kali Uchis, and Vince Staples. But he’s finally focusing on himself and his debut, and today he taps Paak for “Glowed Up” and gives it the visual treatment.
The track has dreamy, bouncy, warped synth layers high and low as Andy PinDrop settles in with his oh so soulful tip-toeing on the line between singing and rapping. The energy shifts around the three-minute mark with Paak in croon mode over mellow, intricate military drums and deep synth grooves. The Bo Mirosseni-directed video features a lit underground party with a hazy, fluorescent flooded aesthetic, and KAYTRANADA contorting his face in delight from all the good vibes surrounding him. Paak shows up in an old-school TV with a swaggy delivery of his lyrics. It’s a smooth clip for silky song. Peep it.
99.9% is out 5/6 on XL. Pre-order is available in physical and digital formats.
