Jack Black and Kate Hudson have promised that the third instalment of the Kung Fu Panda movies will serve up “a combination of delicious treats” for cinema-goers this spring.
Speaking from the red carpet of Kung Fu Panda 3’s European premiere in London, the stars described how the film’s panda hero, Po (Black), faces his toughest challenge yet against evil water buffalo Kai (JK Simmons).
“He’s from another dimension,” said Black. “And he’s angry, he’s petty, he’s jealous …”
“And he’s insecure,” said Hudson. “That’s the magic ingredient – his insecurity.”
Hundreds of fans had lined up in a sunny but freezing Leicester Square to get a glimpse of two actors on Mothering Sunday.
Asked if they got chance to improvise their lines in the recording studio, it seems Black’s flare for comedic timing does not get in the way of professionalism.
“I mean you always give them what they wrote down,” he said. “But then you always take a couple of liberties and do a couple of takes just for ‘shigs’, as they say.”
“I threw a couple of flavour crystals,” admitted Hudson. “Not too many. Only sound flavour cystals.”
According to directors Alessandro Carloni and Jennifer Yuh Nelson, working with a cast that also includes Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman and Jackie Chan, makes it easy in the editing suite.
“You get to work with them so early in the process that they become partners in creating these characters,” said Carloni. “There’s no doubt that Po is Jack Black, but also with new characters like Mei Mei, it was really thanks to Kate Hudson that she came to be the way she is.”
“Kate brings a confidence and charm,” agreed Nelson. “She was actually dancing around in the studio when we recorded her.”
DreamWorks chief executive Jeffrey Katzenberg saluted the crowds who had waited in the cold, adding: “The UK has always been one of the best places in the world for DreamWorks and for our movies. Coming here is an honour and a privilege.”
And for anyone who is already thinking about the next animated picture to watch out for, Katzenberg spoke of a busy schedule ahead.
“We have a movie coming out in October called Trolls with Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick and the whole team that made the original Shrek movie series. You remember the creatures with all the hair? Well, here they come.”
