After several years of development and construction, fans will finally get to experience a new theme park attraction based on James Cameron’s blockbuster next year at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in the . Over the past few years, we’ve showed you a number of photos and videos that took us inside the park, which started construction back in 2014. Today we have an even closer look at the theme park, which has now been dubbed Pandora: The World of Avatar. Bob Chapek, Chairman, Walt Disney World Parks and Resorts, and Joe Rohde, Executive Designer and Vice President, Creative, offered an inside look at the park during the Awaken Summer media event at the Walt resort.
Inside the Magic has the full five-minute video of the Awaken Summer presentation, which you can see below. The Disney executives revealed that fans will get to fly over on the back of a banshee, experience the splendor of a bio-luminescent forest and much more. Disney hasn’t offered an exact date of when the park will open next year, but hopefully we’ll have more concrete details soon.
The centerpiece of is the Floating Mountains. A very detailed model was available for fans to peruse. It contains wooden bridges hand constructed by the Na’vi themselves. There are long and winding rivers snaking through the dense environment. And you can also see the luminescent plant life spread throughout the forests. The mountains themselves hover over a giant river.
Disney has been working closely with Avatar director and producer Jon Landau on the park, while they continue preparations to film their long-awaited sequels. Just last week, it was announced that there will now be four follow-ups, with Avatar 2 getting pushed to December 2018, from its previously-announced December 2017 release date. Avatar 3 will follow two years later in 2020, with Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 arriving back-to-back in 2022 and 2023.
It isn’t known if Pandora: The World of Avatar will tie into the director’s sequels at all, or if there are plans to expand this theme park after the follow-ups hit theaters. Pandora: The World of Avatar is already the largest expansion in the history of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, but we’ll have to wait until next year to see how massive this park truly is. Take a look at the video below, and stay tuned for more on Pandora: The World of Avatar.
