AMC’s The Walking Dead continues to be a ratings monster as its sixth season overall takes its main crew of characters to surprising new places (even as the TV show’s familiar plot beats are becoming increasingly easy fodder for parody). However, the network isn’t about to let anyone forget that its prequel/sister-series, Fear The Walking Dead, will be coming back this April. Season 1 of the early-outbreak saga ended with its characters headed for new shelter on the California coast, but the marketing for season 2 hhasve indicated that they will soon be taking to the ocean to attempt to avoid the unfolding zombie (and human) carnage.
Case in point? The latest key art released for Fear the Walking Dead season 2, offering an eerie tease of what’s to come.
Reminding viewers of the nautical setting that will inform (at least) the beginning of Fear the Waking Dead season 2, the poster proclaims the season’s recurring catchphrase “No Safe Harbor” over what looks to be an otherwise warm and inviting portrait of a high-end yacht drifting under a golden sunset… that is, until you take a second look and note that the sun and clouds have formed a shape resembling a human skull (or, more ominously, a mushroom cloud). In an accompanying press release, AMC outlines its vision for Fear the Walking Dead season 2 – including, the recurring cast members and the new challenges that fans can expect to see the returning characters face:
“Executive produced by showrunner Dave Erickson, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero and David Alpert, “Fear the Walking Dead” stars Kim Dickens as Madison, Cliff Curtis as Travis, Frank Dillane as Nick, Alycia Debnam-Carey as Alicia, Ruben Blades as Daniel, Mercedes Mason as Ofelia, Lorenzo James Henrie as Chris and Colman Domingo as Strand. Season one left off with Madison, Travis and their extended family taking temporary shelter in Strand’s gated estate overlooking the Pacific Ocean. As civil unrest continues to grow and the dead take over Los Angeles, the group prepares to escape to “Abigail,” Strand’s large yacht moored offshore.”
While season 1 of Fear The Walking Dead consisted of a limited 6 episode run, audience’s continued hunger for the gut-munching AMC mega-franchise (based on the hit comics by Robert Kirkman) for zombie action got season 2 bumped up to more than double that amount for a full 15. Production has also moved to Mexico, which should help to provide a welcome change of scenery for the action to play out against. Whereas the original Walking Dead focuses on survival by endurance in a post-apocalyptic world, Fear’s mid-civilizational-collapse setting will likely require a more regular change of pace and location as it continues in order to preserve a sense of chaos and unease. Depending on how long the yacht remains part of the core scenario, new locations could be visited quite frequently – providing further contrast with its deliberately-paced older cousin.
This season is also set to cross-over with the events of Flight 462, a much-hyped but tepidly-received web series depicting a doomed airline flight facing a disaster of the undead variety. Whatever else AMC can come up for its zombies to do, audiences are sure to keep coming back for more: The main series’ ratings remained a dominant force in its recent season premiere, with Fear The Walking Dead generally expected to perform solidly as well when it returns.
