Facebook has announced its plan to open a data center in Ireland with a goal of taking the facility online by late 2017 or early 2018.
EU2, which will be located in Clonee, Ireland, will be Facebook’s second European data center. The first was opened in Luela, Sweden in 2013.
That Facebook chose Ireland as the country to host its second European data center should come as no surprise. Ireland has been the social networking firm’s international headquarters since 2009.
“Clonee will be packed full of cutting-edge technology, making it one of the most advanced, efficient and sustainable data centers in the world,” Facebook vice-president of infrastructure Tom Furlong said in a blog post.
“All the racks, servers, and other components have been designed and built from scratch as part of the Open Compute Project, an industry-wide coalition of companies dedicated to creating energy- and cost-efficient infrastructure solutions and sharing them as open source.”
Facebook said the Clonee data center will be completely powered by wind energy, helping the company to reach its goal of powering half of its infrastructure with renewable energy by the end of 2018.
Facebook’s data center in Luela is also a clean facility, powered by locally generated hydro-electric energy. The company even uses the “using the chilly Nordic air” to cool its servers.
In Clonee, Facebook also plans to use the air to cool its servers, but it will have to be filtered thoroughly due to the sea salt.
