Delta Airlines is hoping to minimize—if not end—cases of lost suitcases for passengers using a US$50 million innovation it recently unveiled, which takes the form of a mobile phone app and a digital luggage tracking system. The program, which the airline aims to put in place by the end of the year, will replace the current barcode and hand scanning system with a radio frequency identification (RDIF) technology, which will have scanners located at several strategic points that will scan “smart tags” attached on passengers’ luggage when checking in. With the system, passengers can then receive notifications on the status of their luggage through the app, such as whether they are being loaded or taken off the flight. The airline says initial tests of the technology resulted in a 99.9 percent success rate.
“With a $50 million investment in RFID at 344 stations around the globe, we aim to reliably deliver every bag on every flight,” said Bill Lentsch, Delta’s senior vice president. “This innovative application of technology gives us greater data and more precise information throughout the bag’s journey.”
