Company Promoting Device as World’s Most Waterproof Phone
Those looking to take thermal images underwater are getting their wish.
Cat has announced it is launching the first smartphone equipped with a thermal camera. The device, the Cat S60, is also being promoted as the world’s most waterproof smartphone.
The company unveiled the industrial-looking phone during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
“To stand out from the crowd in today’s smartphone market requires true innovation and we are proud to partner with FLIR to announce what is truly a world’s first,” Peter Stephens, CEO Bullitt Group, global mobile device licensee for Caterpillar, stated in a company release. “The Cat S60 represents a milestone for smartphones. We are excited for thermal technology to be in the hands of Cat phones customers and to discover the myriad of daily time and efficiency use cases it will present for them.”
The thermal-imaging camera speaks to Caterpillar’s target audience with the device. The camera, the company stated, can be used for a number of projects including detecting heat loss around windows and doors; spotting moisture and missing insulation; identifying over-heating electrical appliances and circuitry; and seeing in complete darkness.
There’s more to the Cat S60 than the thermal cam, though. The phone is “extremely tough and robust” exceeding military specs and has been designed to withstand drops onto a concrete surface from up to 1.8 metres. It’s not only waterproof, either, as the phone is also dustproof.
A specific release date has not been announced but the phone will be available later this year with a suggested price of $600.
