Two MPs from the right-wing Liberal VVD have adopted a call by Germany’s agriculture minister to stop calling meat replacements ‘vegetarian’ schnitzels or hamburgers.
Erik Ziengs and Helma Lodders have asked the cabinet if they are in favour of bringing in a ban on using names of products traditionally associated with meat with meat-free products. Using the word ‘meat’ is misleading and should be banned, the MPs say.
Even if the taste of the meat dish is similar to the vegetarian equivalent, the use of the word meat should not be allowed because ‘it does not reflect the reality’, the AD quotes them as saying.
Other MPs have criticised the two parliamentarians for having strange priorities, the paper said.
