Karyn E. Sullivan has been appointed clinical assistant professor of physician assistant studies at Clarkson University.
Sullivan received her bachelor of science degree/certification of completion in the physician assistant program at Stony Brook Health Sciences Center. She received her bachelor of science in athletic training/exercise science from Ithaca College.
Sullivan has extensive clinical and hands-on experience, and is likely familiar to St. Lawrence County residents as she has worked in the Ogdensburg and Canton-Potsdam area since 2005. She has worked as a physician assistant — or PA — in family practice and emergency department/hospital settings as well as in skilled nursing facilities. She currently also works one day a week in internal medicine and pulmonology at Canton-Potsdam Hospital in the office of Dr. Magendra Thakur.
Before coming to this position at Clarkson, Sullivan worked for four years as a PA at Healey Medical Practice in Canton. Among the many medical services she provided were comprehensive care to adolescents and adults, routine health screenings and physicals, management of acute illnesses and injuries, evaluation, and treatment of mental health disorders and continued management of chronic conditions.
From 2005-2011, she worked with NorthStar Emergency Physicians in Potsdam, where her duties included evaluating, prioritizing, stabilizing, diagnosing and treating adult and pediatric patients who came to the emergency department with minor illnesses and injuries as well as major traumas or immediately life-threatening conditions.
Rounding out her northern New York experiences, she has worked at the skilled nursing facility, Maplewood Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Canton, and at the Ogdensburg Family Practice and Heart Center. Prior to that, she served as a senior physician assistant in emergency medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.
